gym prepping - early morning workout motivation

recently i've found myself having a little bit of trouble on my afternoon runs on the treadmill.  i don't know if it is just that i'm a little too tired, or too hungry after driving to and from work ... oh and working for 8 hours in between ... and my body just isn't into it?

so i thought why not try and make a morning trip to the gym? i used to go in the mornings a couple of times a week and cannot say that i ever regretted going.  the most important step of leaving your house on or before 5am? getting out of bed. that is the toughest part. once you're up... you're up.  at least that's how i am.  literally turning of the alarm and putting my feet on the floor is the worst part. and then i'm okay!

to get myself pumped up (as much as one can be pumped for the alarm to go off at 4:30am...) i started a search on pinterest (duh) for inspiration and motivation to get myself out of bed super early.  here are some of my favorite finds:

oh and one of the best sayings around (which can be applied to many situations in life!) is this:
fail to plan = plan to fail.

so plan is what i did.

since i hadn't packed for an early workout session in about 7 months, it was like starting from scratch.  so i spent about 30 minutes before bed gathering all of the essentials and prepping as much as possible.  the last thing i wanted to do so early in the morning was search for something i needed.

so i took the time to gather and prep.

this included getting the coffee set up, packing a breakfast and lunch for the next day. i try to set everything out (obviously i keep things cold in the fridge but have a lunchbox ready to throw it all in, first thing!) and run through the list of things i need/want in my head. i would hate to forget something so early in the morning!

since i don't live close enough to the gym to run home after my workout, i need to pack up everything i need. shower supplies, clothes for work, etc.  so not only do i prepare my exercise clothes, i also need my clothes for work, all of them. and don't forget a change of shoes!

it is also a good idea to have a an empty water bottle so you don't forget to grab one on your way out.

i have to say that i felt like such a bag lady that morning. and it was really fun cramming all of that stuff in my gym locker. but. it was so worth it. i do not regret that early morning workout at all. and was able to get up, get in 3 miles on the treadmill, showered and to my office by 7:20am.  not a bad start to the morning, huh?

i'm hoping to try again this week. i'm tempted to take a class or get to the gym just 10 minutes early as to get the treadmill of my choice this time. i am not complaining because i'm happy that others are choosing to be healthy but seriously...how is it that all of the treadmills are full at 5:15am? :)

what is your favorite time of day to workout? do you have any tips to share with me to keep me motivated? i'd love to hear what you have to say, sharing these types of things helps to hold us all accountable and keeps us moving forward!
anyone else hitting the gym super early this week?

have a good day my friends!

Motivation Monday: 03.03.2014

Last week was a pretty productive and positive week!

Monday 02.24.  Thought I'd give TRX a try. HA.
I followed this video and did 3 exercises, 10 reps each. And I tried doing a few pushups also. My abs....all of them...my sides...my ribs. So Sore.  From approximately 30 reps. Apparently that crap works.  And apparently my abs and back are weak. True story.

Tuesday 02.25. my schedule had 4 miles.  I was in the best mood, pumped up and ready to run.  Got on the treadmill and just couldn't pull it off.  2 miles done and done.  I was a sweaty mess and couldn't shake the unpleasant feeling in my stomach.  Sometimes running at the "end" of the day is harder...maybe from using up so much energy during the day?

Wednesday 02.26 l.a.z.y. the end.

Thursday 02.27. I got up at 4:45am and WENT TO THE GYM.
Yes, you read that correctly.  I did it.  Without too much effort to actually get out of bed. Strange.
I am still trying to wrap my mind around the fact that the last time I made an early morning trip to the gym...was 7 months ago. WHAT in the world?!

This is me. Just call me Bag Lady.  Freshly showered and headed back to the car to drive into work.  And I'd just like to mention that I got up, out of bed, to the gym, ran 3 miles, cooled down, showered, got ready, drove to work...and got to my desk by 7:20am.  That feels awesome.  AND not to mention that by the time I got to work, I had burned as many calories as I normally do between 12-1pm! #winning

p.s. I am obviously a big fan of my Mean Streets t-shirt from last summer.  It is honestly one of my favorite t-shirts to workout in... really soft and longer than many of my other t-shirts. Anyway, back on track...

Motivation Monday - 02.24.2014

66 more days until the mini marathon!!

(just a blurry picture of me from last year...)

with that said, this last saturday i had one of my best and most favorite runs in the history of my running.  i felt so strong and confident and happy. not a single complaint.  i honestly cannot remember a time when i ran for more than 3.5 or 4 miles without complaining. ask meagan...she'll tell you!  i will finish that run but it doesn't mean that i wont tell you how unhappy about it i am during the remainder of it. ;)
so without a single ounce of negativity, i ran my fastest 5 miles yet.  and this week's training only called for 4.5 that day.

i am feeling much more confident for this week's training race downtown.  a little disappointed that the weather isn't warming up (it may actually be colder for the march race than it was for the february one!) but i know that i can run the distance. 6 miles. coming right up!

here are a few of my favorite motivational pieces from this last week:

Motivation Monday: 01.27.2014

Happy Monday!

I hope that everyone is staying inside and cozy during this stinking Polar Vortex that we just cannot seem to get rid of.  Seriously...please go away now.  Thanks!

On to a happier note...

In fitness-related news, I'm still running/walking!  Slowly working up to more running than walking and it is feeling really sweaty and really good.  This last week I completed 3 days of walking 0.5 miles and running a mile (x 2) and this week's schedule calls for the same.

I am thinking though I may try to push it a little harder and see if I can increase the running time and decrease the walking by just a little or even skip to the next's weeks training of running a mile and walking for 2 minutes (x2) but that seems drastic.  My runs have actually felt really good and not too strenuous so maybe I can do it. I think I can... I think I can...

Pin location.

I just wish that I could actually run to somewhere nice and warm... and have my family follow behind me with all of our stuff... so we could make a beach vacation out of it. ;)

So this Saturday is the first race of the 500 Festival Mini Marathon Training Series.  Luckily the first race is only a 5k and I'm really thinking that I can handle it.  The only problem is that as of today, the forecast looks a little like this.  Dang.

Sat Feb 1

Light Wintry Mix
32°
19°

Light Wintry Mix
Chance of precip:50%
Wind: WNW at 7 mph

Marcie and I told ourselves that as long as it was 30 degrees, we'd be out there running.  PLEASE let the weather hold up so we can get our 5k training race completed! Please!!!

Anyway. I need to keep on running, increasing my distances and contemplate either going to some classes at the gyms and start lifting some weights or doing cross training. I am really lazy on my off days from running and that needs to change. For real.  I want to get stronger so I can run better and longer. Time to kick it up a notch!!

I hope we all have the best week ever and seriously, this weather sucks so everyone stay safe.  Hopefully when I write my next Motivation Monday post, I'll have something good to say about our training race!

Have a wonderful week!!

Motivation Monday (or Thursday!)

This post includes all types of motivation...not all are fitness related this week!  So just be ready for random ramblings...because that's what I do!

As you know, I've started off this year with a great sense of motivation along with a most positive mindset and I'm letting it take over ...really going with it.  I've restarted my fitness and nutrition routine and we've started saving our money like crazy.

It feels so good! If only I could express to you how happy it makes me.  I feel like our lives are more organized and that we are happier.  Because we've been planning, it gives me less time to worry or stress out about the little things.  We just go with the flow and enjoy every minute we have together as a family.  Nothing about that sounds negative to me!

For the last two weeks, we've really been planning a menu and sticking to a strict list at the grocery store.  2 weeks in and going strong.  It should be a habit pretty soon, right?  My "goal" was for us to spend around $100 per week on groceries for our entire family.  That includes things we need to get us through the week for breakfasts, lunches and dinners.  This last weekend, we hit our goal again!

I am honestly so very proud of us.  I really hope this trend continues because I feel like we are really tackling these things as a team and making stuff happen.

In other financial-related motivations, we have been doing such a good job of cutting our spending. I started talking about cutting our spending here.  Outside of paying our usual monthly bills, I  believe the only other purchases we've made this month include groceries, gas and my half-marathon entry fee.  It will be SO nice to see our bank account at the end of the month (3 pay days this month, woot!) and know that we saved so much.  So many fewer transactions.  I am so happy that we're doing this and so thankful for such a wonderful teammate in this journey.  I feel like we are getting along and helping each other out even more so far this year and I like this trend.

Now to switch gears a little bit...

In the fitness world, things are finally starting to pick up the pace and I'm starting to try and find my running groove again.  This week marks 2 weeks in a row that I've been staying on track with scheduled run/walks.  It has been a long time since I've been consistent.  And since I've been starting to run and make healthier choices, I can already feel a difference. That is motivation.

Also, something I am a little giddy and excited about.  Nike has a new running coach that's a part of the Nike+ app.  Although I won't be using it quite yet, I am going to give it a try as I train for my upcoming Mini Marathon in May.  Apparently it is a run coach that also gives you cross training workouts to do as well. I'm really looking forward to trying it out.  I am such a big fan of Nike so I hope this lives up to my expectations!

Its all set up to help me train for May so it looks like in a couple of weeks it will remind me that we're supposed to start training.  Can't wait!!

p.s. 303.6 miles of training to go? Say what?!  Maybe I shouldn't have looked at that (giant!!) number...

Anyway, in the spirit of motivation, yesterday we had a baby shower with muffins, donuts, cupcakes, cookies, etc.  And I didn't eat a single thing.  So I'm giving myself credit for that.  #winning I hope to keep that in mind as we are moving towards the weekend.  The nice thing about watching your spending and sticking to a menu and shopping list?  No snacks in the house.  Therefore I have nothing extra to stuff my face with! :)

And to switch gears just one more time...

Here's another kind of motivation/inspiration.  The blog world.  I came across one of the most beautiful blogs this morning.  After looking it over quickly, I was immediately struck by the beauty in the everyday photos.  This woman seems like a pretty amazing mom (and photographer!) and both of those things really inspire me.  I want to have wonderful memories and beautiful photographs that tell the story. In short, if you want to see some beautiful photos, read some wonderful stories and just feel good, check out Annapolis & Company.  It honestly encourages me to keep taking pictures, to try and make them better everyday and to have fun with my little family.  I am feeling very encouraged and inspired today!

I think that's enough random for today. I'll be back tomorrow to share a my first video...compiled of a fun and snowy day. I hope you'll like it and I hope that it keeps me motivated to make more videos in the future.  (Jackson and I watched it together last night and he was a fan, so at least I know that one person will like it!) So anyway, stay tuned!

um. how many times did I say the word "motivation" today? Geeze. I'm on my own nerves. ;)

Happy Thursday my friends!

making stuff happen.

Well crap. I signed up for another half marathon for this year.  The first in May and the second is now in November.

A couple of my friends are running it too so that only helped to push me in the right direction.  That and the discount on the race entry until midnight tonight. I'm a sucker for a good sale price!

Monumental Half... I'll see you November 1st!!

Who is this girl that keeps signing up for these dang races?! I guess when you have the motivation and the drive, you better run with it.  So that's what I'm doing.  This will be my best fitness year yet.

I am also quite intrigued with these beauties.  I've been so tempted to try one of their workout series in the last year or so and now with it being a new year, it is the perfect time to start.  Plus, I love the sound of this new one! Not only that... they have a new show on Bravo so that's even more ways for me to watch these girls in action and hopefully keep me on the motivation train.

I am so ready to be the best version of me.  I still cannot believe the things I've been doing in the last year and it is hard to imagine that this year can be even better but I'm totally willing to give it a try!

Let's make things happen.  And thanks to Meagan for this gem... #positivity2014 . WOOT.

Now. Time to get that treadmill warmed up once again...

Motivation Monday - 12.16.2013

So. I spent another week...yes...another week...as a slug.  Being a slug did however help me to consider another game plan when it comes to exercising/running/half-marathon training.

And now, I'm feeling motivated. At least a little bit.

With that said, here's how my week is going to look.  This is all after following another fabulous training program provided by Running Through Life.  I love this site. I really do.

20 Week Half-Marathon Training:
Week One

Monday - Weight Training or Cross Training
Tuesday - Run 1/2 Mile and Walk 1/2 Mile - Repeat 2 Times
Wednesday - Weight Training or Cross Training
Thursday - Run 1/2 Mile and Walk 1/2 Mile - Repeat 2 Times
Friday - Cross Train or Rest
Saturday - Run 1/2 Mile and Walk 1/2 Mile - Repeat 2 Times
Sunday - Rest or Easy Walk

According to this site, I officially have 20ish (actually 19 weeks and some change...) weeks until the mini.  I can totally do this, right?!

What I like best about this idea is that I won't have to run so many long distances outside while it is frigid. Because let's be real...no one likes to run 6+ miles on a treadmill and no one likes to run outside when there is ice and snow on the ground.  Or maybe some people do... but those some people are not me. Hopefully by the time I get to the higher mileage runs, the weather may start to warm up? At least more than 19 degrees?

So that's the plan. I'm really, really going to do my very best to stick to it.  Today especially I'm feeling energized and motivated and SO EXCITED for what 2014 will bring.  Let's. Do. This.  2014 Bring it on!

And because every post needs a photo... even if it is 100% unrelated.

Maybe he will actually enforce my running schedule? LOL.
That was probably one of the worst jokes I've ever made. Please forgive me.

So. Check out the site and let me know what programs you use or anything that might be helpful to us runners!!

Happy to finally be getting back out there this week.  Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Motivation Monday - 11.25.2013

Happy Monday my friends!   I apologize in advance for the formatting of this post. Blogger is not playing nice today and I'm not sure what's happening.  So I'm going to pretend this looks pretty and hopefully you will too!  Everyone have a good week??
 Here's my weekly recap!
Monday -  11.18 - Nothing. The usual. ;)
Tuesday -  11.19 - Ran 3 miles...

Wednesday - 11.20 - turned into a rest day. go figure!

Thursday -  11.21 - Run 3 miles. Not super fast but felt pretty good.  And I ended up with a pretty good calorie burn that day. I love those kinds of days!

Friday - 11.22 - Rested.  Hung out with my boys. And loved it.

Saturday - 11.23 - The goad was to run for 4.5 miles.  We had a busy, busy day ahead of us so I had to make it to the gym at some point.  I waited until Jackson was down for his nap and took off.  I made it there and was running right along. My legs and head were totally in the game. Until my stomach was growling too much and I was starting to feel the effects of not eating before trying to exercise.  Apparently I should have eaten something between breakfast and trying to run several miles at 1:30pm.  I am just not a fan of eating before I run because it doesn't sit well in my stomach. Anyway, I made it 3 miles before I had to stop, go home, and eat as soon as I walked in the door!  Before stopping, it was actually a pretty good run!
Saturday evening Todd and I were child free (he went to Grandpa Brink's for the night!) so we did a little shopping and dinner.  I found myself some new cold gear in preparation for the Drumstick Dash this week. Holy cow...time has flown.  I cannot believe it is almost race day!  Any-who... I should be all set.  I decided on this hoodie and these leggings.  Please keep your fingers crossed that they'll keep me warm because it is going to be CHILLY.  Now I need to get my butt outside and get my money's worth out of these clothes!

Sunday - 11.24 - Rested.

I wish I had more fun things to say but honestly this formatting is making me a little bit crazy and I guess I should get some things done today.  This will be a great and busy week so I'm very much looking forward to it. Busy usually means that I keep it moving so I'm hoping for lots of calorie burning...  Please stay tuned for Thanksgiving posts (we will have 3 Thanksgivings this year!) and Drumstick Dash updates.  Lots of friends, family and fun this week!

In the world of fitness, here's what this week looks like:

Monday -  Weight Training for Cross Training - or in my case, I'll be hand-washing a load or two of laundry since our washing machine decided its time was up.  Nice.  So that should burn some calories! I also have loads of laundry to be put away.  That should keep me moving!
Tuesday - Run 4 Miles.
Wednesday - Weight Training or Cross Training.
Thursday - Run 3 Miles.  I'll actually (hopefully) be running 4.6... send good thoughts my way!
Friday - Cross Train or Rest.
Saturday - Run 5 Miles.

Here's to lots and lots of miles this week.  Cold miles in fact!  I'm really excited.  Especially since Marcie and I are signing up for the Mini Marathon.  We are crazy. And excited.  I believe Marcie has already registered and I hope to do so later today.  We are also both registering for a training series that includes 3 "races" prior to May that help runners gauge where they're at as fair as training for the half goes. All of the training "races" and the actual race for just about $100.  Not too shabby! Makes me wanna get out there and hit the pavement!

I hope everyone has a fabulous holiday week and fitness week. It can be hard with the holidays so I'm really hoping to just keep moving and not eat every.thing. in front of my face.

Good luck to all of us, have a wonderful week!!!

xoxox.

And honestly. I do apologize about the formatting. Blogger is not playing nice for me today :(

Motivation Monday - 11.18.2013

Happy Monday my friends!

Here's my weekly summary from last week.  All I can say is that I am really starting to feel better and the more and more active I am, the more I love the way I'm feeling.  Exercise is the best medicine.  I hope this positive attitude keeps up.  I have a lot more miles to add on in the upcoming weeks.  And maybe I'll bite the bullet and finally register for the Mini Marathon in May?
Anyway, back to the weekly summary.  I'm proud of my activity this week!

Monday - 11.11. - I was "scheduled" to cross or weight train but had a really cruddy day at work and thought that maybe a run would help me feel better.  The run did help and so did the pasta and wine after.  It was nice to get myself back at the YMCA and feel the energy of everyone else there working up a sweat.  Talk about motivation.  Although why were there so many people at the gym at 6:30?  Shouldn't you all be at home eating dinner?  That's what Todd and Jackson were doing!!

Tuesday - 11.12 - I was "scheduled to run 3 miles today decided to run a quick one to add to the two from the previous day.  Something is better than nothing!

Wednesday - 11.13 - guess what? no weight or cross training. I did nothing!

Thursday -  Ran a quick 2 miles before picking up Jackson from school.  Not my fastest but again, just to be moving makes me feel so much better.  One day I'll be faster. Or maybe I won't.  At this point, I just want to keep adding more distance and if my pace is slow, I'll be happy as long as I can finish!

Friday - 11.15 - Rested. Yes!

Saturday - 11.16 - Ran 4 miles! I met with Meagan at her 8th mile and she finished while I did my entire workout. lol.  It is SO nice to have that positive energy from a friend.  She is such a good runner and helps me be a better runner.  I've said it before and I'll say it again, I want to be like her when I grow up! :)

After meeting with Meagan and completing our 4 miles, we met up with Marcie to do a nice run/walk.  The weather was chilly but having my girls out there helped to keep the energy and warmth up.  Oh and the Starbucks at the finish line is also a treat!  I am so lucky to have these girls always keeping me off the couch and motivated. I'm the lucky one!

Good thing we ran on Saturday instead of Sunday.... This is what Saturday afternoon looked like around Indy. Luckily everyone was safe, but I'm so glad we didn't have to mess with this!

Sunday - 11.17 - Rest day. Awesome day with my boys!

Here are my goals and training schedule for the upcoming week (11.18 - 11.24) :

Monday -  Weight training or cross training.
Tuesday -  Run 3 miles
Wednesday - Weight Training or cross training.
Thursday -  Run 3 miles.
Friday - Cross train or rest.
Saturday - Run 4.5 miles.
Sunday - Rest or Easy Walk

Someone please, please, please help me find the motivation to actually weight or cross train.  I follow several blogs (here, here, here) and these women are amazing when it comes to running and cross/weight training. I just cannot find the grove.  The thought is overwhelming. I love/hate sore muscles.  I am terrible at finding workouts that I actually like enough to do them.  I am the worst when it comes to working out, that's why I'm honestly shocked that I've kept up running for so long.

What keeps you motivated?  Anyone have any tips/workouts/experience with cross/weight training that might help me? :)

Here's to a good week! Let's keep our bodies moving!!
